The IceBreak, you know. Now an engine of Sitemule.

Still the only native web and application server built to serve the web directly from RPG and COBOL on IBM i - without middleware, and without rewriting a single line of business logic. Twenty years on, we’re still refining it. And today, IceBreak has taken the next step: reborn as one of the four high-performance engines powering Sitemule.

If you’ve heard of IceBreak - or you’ve been running it for years - you’re in the right place. We’re System & Method A/S, the Danish software company that has built and supported IceBreak from the start. Today you’ll find it at the heart of Sitemule, our complete modernization ecosystem, running natively on IBM i.

The story so far

IceBreak was built to solve a problem nobody else was solving cleanly: how do you serve modern web applications and APIs directly from RPG and COBOL, without putting Apache, middleware, or external servers in the way?

Our Chief Architect, Niels Liisberg - IBM Champion since 2019 - designed it as a precompiler and native runtime that extends RPG, COBOL, and SQL with modern web capabilities, while keeping every line of business logic exactly where it has always lived: on IBM i.

For more than two decades, IceBreak has run quietly inside systems across finance, insurance, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and logistics - handling everything from a few thousand transactions a day to, at one global financial customer, sustained throughput of hundreds of millions of transactions per hour.

Where it is today

IceBreak hasn’t gone anywhere - and it hasn’t stood still. Like its three other engines - IceCap for screen transformation, BlueSeries for multi-channel communication, and BlueNote for monitoring - IceBreak has been reborn as an engine of Sitemule: the web-serving and application engine at the core of the platform.

Nothing you rely on goes away. IceBreak remains a separately installed product and will continue to be fully maintained and supported - exactly as you know it today. Same team, same code lineage, same phone number, same contracts, same invoices from System & Method A/S.

New opportunities open up. Because IceBreak is now an engine of Sitemule, upgrading is a natural next step, not a migration project. Sitemule unites web serving, service-based architecture, screen transformation, messaging, and monitoring in one browser-based Workspace - running natively on your IBM i. When you read about Sitemule, you’re reading about a platform that runs on IceBreak.

What you get with it today

You don’t just get a web server anymore. As the runtime engine of Sitemule, IceBreak anchors a complete modernization environment:

Modernize existing RPG and COBOL programs into browser-accessible applications, web services, microservices, and APIs - without rewriting them.

Transform 5250 green-screen interfaces into modern user interfaces through the IceCap engine, layered on top of IceBreak.

Complete with tools and methods to customize with domain models, AI-assisted documentation, cloud and third-party integration, and a developer workflow built around VS Code.

All of it runs natively on IBM i. No middleware. No external servers. SOX-compliant separation of development and production, OAuth / LDAP / Active Directory authentication, SSL/TLS encryption throughout - the IBM i security model, not a bolt-on.

IceBreak is a product of System & Method A/S, founded in 1989 in Denmark. We modernized ourselves the same way we modernize our customers - our four trusted products are today the engines of Sitemule. This platform modernizes IBM i and brings a web-centric approach to the business applications running on it. All our software is developed specifically for IBM’s midrange platform lineage - AS/400, iSeries, i5, System i, and Power Systems - and the operating systems that have run on it: OS/400, i5/OS, and IBM i.
