The BlueNote, you know. Now an engine of Sitemule.

Built to watch every job, message, and subsystem on IBM i - and to act on them the moment something breaks. Alerts to your phone, built-in auto-reply, no external tools required. And today, BlueNote has taken the next step: reborn as one of the four high-performance engines powering Sitemule - the engine that keeps the platform itself running.

If you've heard of BlueNote - or you've been running BlueNote Monitor or BlueNote Communicator for years - you're in the right place. We're System & Method A/S, the Danish software company that has built and supported BlueNote from the start. Today you'll find it at the heart of Sitemule, our complete modernization ecosystem, running natively on IBM i.

The story so far

BlueNote was built for the IBM i operator's most universal problem: knowing the moment something on the system has gone wrong - ideally before your customers do. Most monitoring tools at the time polled IBM i from the outside, which meant blind spots and delays. We put the monitor inside the operating system instead - hooked directly into message queues, job logs, and subsystem APIs, with alerts routed out through the channel operators actually carried.

That channel was SMS, which made BlueNote more than a monitor. The same SMS plumbing grew into BlueNote Communicator - a business communication platform that customers such as Ya Bank, LeasePlan, and Schenker used for important information, delivery confirmations, and customer service workflows. At peak, BlueNote handled millions of SMS messages per month.

One distinctive feature has been there from the start: BlueNote lets you answer back. A system message can be replied to by SMS. The operator can start and stop subsystems, launch programs, or restart the machine - by text - provided their phone number is on the authorized roster. That capability shipped when most monitoring tools could only watch.

Where it is today

BlueNote hasn't gone anywhere - and it hasn't stood still. Like its three other engines - IceBreak for web serving and applications, IceCap for screen transformation, and BlueSeries for multi-channel communication - BlueNote has been reborn as an engine of Sitemule: the monitoring engine that powers alerts and operational resilience across the entire platform. It monitors not just your IBM i jobs and subsystems, but also the other Sitemule engines and modules themselves, ensuring application uptime across the whole suite. When something breaks, it identifies the error, retries, logs the event to Db2, and dispatches alerts.

Nothing you rely on goes away. BlueNote remains a separately installed product and will continue to be fully maintained and supported - exactly as you know it today. Same engine, same conservative principle - stay inside IBM i - same team, same phone number, same contracts, same invoices from System & Method A/S.

New opportunities open up. Because BlueNote is now an engine of Sitemule, upgrading is a natural next step, not a migration project. Sitemule unites web serving, service-based architecture, screen transformation, messaging, and monitoring in one browser-based Workspace - running natively on your IBM i. When you read about "zero-downtime operations" on our website, you're reading about the next chapter of BlueNote.

What you get with it today

You don't just get an alert tool anymore. As the monitoring engine of Sitemule, BlueNote serves as the operational resilience layer for a full IBM i platform:

  • Real-time detection - jobs, message queues, subsystems, user profiles, and conditional triggers, watched directly at the source via standard IBM i APIs. No polling, no external agents.
  • Automated recovery - when a job fails or stalls on a waiting message, BlueNote can run predefined responses: retry, restart, escalate, or auto-reply to system messages within a defined timeframe.
  • Two-way SMS system control - answer system messages by text, start and stop subsystems by text, even IPL the machine. Strictly authorized through the BlueNote user roster - only registered phone numbers can act, matched right down to the country code.
  • Multi-channel alerting - SMS, email, or service call to external dashboards, dispatched through BlueNote. Every event is logged in Db2 for full traceability.
  • Cross-engine monitoring - watches the rest of Sitemule itself, not just your applications. If something on the platform stops, BlueNote knows first.

All of it runs natively on IBM i, with no external monitoring agents to install or maintain. Native object authorities and role-based authorization are inherited from the IBM i security model - not added on top.

BlueNote is a product of System & Method A/S, founded in 1989 in Denmark. We modernized ourselves the same way we modernize our customers - our four trusted products are today the engines of Sitemule. This platform modernizes IBM i and brings a web-centric approach to the business applications running on it. All our software is developed specifically for IBM's midrange platform lineage - AS/400, iSeries, i5, System i, and Power Systems - and the operating systems that have run on it: OS/400, i5/OS, and IBM i.
